    A Fair To Remember

Fun for all at the 31st annual Richmond County Fair

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- There wasn't a hurricane in sight.

Not that little Hunter McCarthy noticed the sunny blue sky and a light breeze that floated through the opening day of the Richmond County Fair with the softness of cotton candy.

The 3-year-old Rossville toddler was busy rocking out to the Anthony Bambino Band on the AWE Rock in the Ruins stage, tapping his little foot to the New Springville musician's original tune, "Roll Your Love," which appears on the new CD, "Desolate Town."

When asked if he liked the band, the youngster lifted his eyes and nodded his head emphatically as his parents, Raena and Dan McCarthy, smiled.

    RESULTS FROM FAIR CONTESTS

"He has a little guitar at home," Mrs. McCarthy said. "Yeah, he plays it. He loves it."

There isn't much not to love at this 31st annual Fair set up on the streets of Historic Richmond Town.

From the fried foods to the pies to the Italian sausage sandwiches to the pig races -- yes, live little squealers running around a race track in qualifying heats smiling as if they are having more fun than the delighted crowd watching -- it's a nice way to end the summer.

Especially when the face-painting and the balloons are free.

The pig races drew the largest crowd, but artist Nancy Lyon and her magician/balloon-bouquet husband Brian Harger ran a close second all afternoon as moms and dads lined their kids up to get faces, arms and body parts painted.

"I waited for almost an hour," Pi-Kei Young of Great Kills said after Ms. Lyon painted bright blue and yellow streaks and wings around daughter Nicole's eye.

"She surprised me," Nicole Young said.

"Was it worth the wait? Yeah," Pi-Kei and Nicole agreed.

Staten Island's political hopefuls even took advantage of the large crowd and the friendly atmosphere as reps for Republican House candidates Michael Allegretti and Michael Grimm handed out brochures while a U.S. Senate candidate walked the grounds introducing himself and talking to potential voters.

"I'm just here shaking hands, saying hello," said Jay Townsend, who is competing for the Republican party nomination with Gary Bernstein against Democratic U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer.

"We're having a great time," Townsend said. "Everybody is friendly."

That's what this Fair is all about.
